School, school, it's so cool!

Let me start by saying I am way behind in getting this posted. Two weeks ago on September 2nd Tristan officially started "pre-school". Back in February I enrolled him in a 2 day a week Mom's Day Out program for the 2008-2009 school year. The class is only from 9 to 2:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but they somehow seem to pack music, gymnastics, arts and crafts, outdoor playtime and childrens church in that short time, along with snack, lunch and nap! Amazing!

Tristan is in the "Young 2 Year Old" class, which is a class for the kids who won't be 2 until after September 1st but are too old to be in a class with "babies". It's kind of nice because all the kids in his class are within about 4 months of each other, so they are close to the same level developmentally. And, a couple of his friends from our playgroup are in the same class.

I had been waiting for this class to start since before Parker was even born, but as the day approached I started to get nervous about leaving my little baby, who had never been left with "strangers" before. The week prior to the start we attended open house where we met his teachers, Mrs. Kim and Mrs. Theresa, and scoped out his classroom. Much to our surprise Tristan ran in the room, played with the toys, talked to the teachers and seemed completely content on being there. Not how we expected it to go since it usually takes him a few times to warm up to new things. I thought to myself, he may not take it so bad afterall. We got all the important info and additional paperwork to fill out and headed home with our list of "stuff" our child would need for school.

Obviously he needed a backpack and lunchbox, which I had already ordered with his name on them, of course...everything has to be labeled so why not just get their name embroidered, right?

And he needed a nap mat. My Mom, crafty as she is, made a cover for his mat out of this cool guitar fabric, and even put his name on it...I personally think it was the coolest mat cover at school!

We got all the pertinent stuff and Tuesday rolled around so off we were to the first day of school. Victor had the day off so we both took him, not knowing quite what to expect, would he act the way he did at open house and not care or would it be an all out cry-fest? We got to school and naturally snapped a few pics before heading inside.

Group shot attempt 2, and no Peyton doesn't have a mohawk going down the back of his head, it's actually Emma standing almost exactly behind him!

Group shot attempt 3, at least you can see them all in this one!

After picture-time was over we we went inside along with all the other parents and children...it was kind of a mad house that first day! We got to his room and went inside (something they advised us against at open house) and the melt-down began! After a few attempts at consoling him we finally just left him like this in the arms of Mrs.Kim.

I think it broke our hearts more than I could even try to explain here, but we both knew it was best to go. Those five hours he was there that day seemed to go by pretty slow (now they go by pretty darn fast!) and we were both anxious to pick him up at 2:30. We headed back that afternoon with curious minds to see how our little baby did on his first day of school. We got there a little before 2:30, thinking we were plenty early, but he was one of the last ones to be picked up. He was crying when we walked in but we were assured by the teacher and a fellow parent that he had just begun crying...probably because all the other kids were leaving and he wasn't yet! We sccoped him up, headed home and decide to get there extra early for Thursday pick-up time so he wouldn't see all the other kids leaving before him!

Pick up time, I think their faces say it all!

Tristan went back to school that Thursday and the crying was much less...I didn't go in the class that day, just handed him over to the teacher and left. Hard for me, but easier on him. He had a good day on Thursday and his buddy Kaeson came over to play afterwards and they were as happy as can be!

Preschool rocks! Clinton's been throwing up all evening, so we have to miss school tomorrow. :-(
